How to Mentor a Beginning Lifter

The iron sport has a strange way of finding all of us at some point in time. Whether it’s the appeal of rocking bodybuilding clothing and living that no-compromise lifestyle or we just want to lose a couple of pounds while getting a little stronger, weightlifting isn’t just a hobby. With the New Year coming up, you likely have people in your circle who want to lift but don’t know where to start. Once the student, now you’re the mentor. Here’s how to mentor a beginning lifter and help them fall in love with the iron sport.

Get to Know Their Goals

Not everyone gets into bodybuilding, or exercise for that matter, for the same reasons. One friend might want to bulk up and fill out their frame; another might want to drop some pounds from their college years. Whatever the case, these different goals will require a different training regimen.

Chances are you’ve been around the block in your bodybuilding clothes and have gone from one goal to the next over the years, so you have a wealth of training knowledge to share. Whether they’re bulking, cutting, or just trying to build some sort of workout routine, your mentorship is crucial for helping them get started in the right direction.

Start with the Basics and Go From There

Whether they’ve dabbled with lifting before or can’t tell the difference between a dumbbell and a barbell, it helps to start at square one, so they develop good lifting habits and practices. You probably won’t want to run them through your high-intensity program, but you shouldn’t make things too easy for them either. Start with the compound movements such as squats, bench press, and deadlift, and teach them all of the form cues that will help them maximize leverage, avoid injury, and set them up for future success.

Additionally, help them tailor a program that best fits their goals. If they’re trying to get big, show them a split you’ve followed to prep for a competition. If they’re trying to lose weight, share your secrets to making cardio fun. Assume they know little to nothing about exercise and see their progress as a reflection of your teaching.

Keep It Real with Them

If there’s one thing to take away from this, make sure that you keep it real with them. Bodybuilding and weight training aren’t easy. There aren’t any hacks or secrets. You know this and maybe had to learn the hard way at some point, but they might not yet.

Don’t let any bro-science or fake training advice take up any space in their mind. Instead, promote discipline, intensity, and determination. Nip any excuses in the bud, yet still, be approachable and don’t kill their love for lifting before it even gets started. It’s a fine line to walk, but if you can do it, your friend will be well on their way to achieving their goals.
