How You Know It’s Time for a Change in Training Programming

Consistency is key in life and in the weight room. At the core of this consistency is your programming or workout routine. It’s what keeps you on track day-in and day-out, and if all goes well, it gets you to our ultimate goals. That being said, all good things must come to an end, and your routine might be up next. Is it time for a change? Here are a few things to consider.

You Want Different Things, and Your Current Program Won’t Cut It

Throughout your lifting career, things are going to change. From the bodybuilding apparel you wear to your physique goals, change isn’t always a bad thing, but it’s important you recognize when change is in the air. There’s nothing worse than slogging through a workout not feeling on top of your game and not seeing any improvement from the previous week.

Although our workout routines are the mechanisms that power our goals, they can also hold them back as well. Consider what your current goals are. Are you looking to build strength or cut some body fat? Maybe you’re trying to work on your functional movements to fill in any gaps and require new exercises in your routine. Whatever the case, if your goals are changing, along with addressing your diet, lifestyle, and other factors, consider how your workout routine is or is not helping with this current goal.

Things Have Gotten a Little Too Routine

Let’s face it, when you take away the hype playlist and the social media posts, a routine is just that: routine. Things can get monotonous, and we’ve all hit a metaphorical brick wall with our training at one point or another. Whether it’s a plateau or just plain boredom, if putting on your bodybuilding clothes and heading to the workout doesn’t excite you anymore, it’s time for something to change.

You might be surprised how even just swapping one lift for another could make things more interesting. To keep your body at its peak and keep making progress, you need to push yourself in the gym, and sometimes old routines can keep you from doing that. By upping the intensity with more compound movements or higher reps, you can push yourself in new ways, all while getting closer to your goals.

You’re Curious to Try New Things

Lastly, sometimes the only reason you need to change routines is pure curiosity. Maybe you saw an interesting new take on the push/pull/legs split and want to dump your bro split to give it a shot. Or maybe you’re interested in incorporating a different machine or movement into your regimen. Whatever the case is, change doesn’t have to be forever. You have your whole lifting career to go back to your old routine, and you’ll never know if you’ll like something until you try it. Unless you’re in strict competition prep, take a week to try something new; it just might be your new standard lifting program.
