The New Year Is Almost Here: Set Your Bodybuilding Goals Right

It might seem like just yesterday we were thinking about all of the memories we'd make this year, but it's all finally over. How are those goals coming along? Hopefully, you're crushing it and on pace to finish the year strong. That being said, now is as good a time as any to start thinking about what you're going to conquer next year. Let's get a head start with these bodybuilding goal-setting tips.

Why It Isn't Too Early to Start

You might be thinking, "Hold up, the year isn't even over, and I still haven't hit my peak form yet." While that might be true, you also don't want to be caught flat-footed when the calendar rolls over to January, and you're without a solid plan of attack. We all have 365 days to work with, and the best among us will already have their eyes set a couple of steps down the road.

Be SMART with Your Goals

Everyone can come up with a goal like "I want to be stronger than I was last year" or "I want to be bigger," but you should try and be as specific with these goals as possible. How much bigger? How much stronger? Great goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound, or S.M.A.R.T. This system has been used by everyone from business leaders to bodybuilders because it helps you finetune what exactly you'd like to achieve. So, instead of saying you want to get stronger, specify the lift, the weight, and how you'll go about achieving the goal.

Have One Huge Goal

While you want your goals to be attainable, there's nothing wrong with having one or two goals that are loftier than the rest. Think of these as your "shoot for the stars, land somewhere above the sky" type of goals. Whether you achieve them doesn't matter so much that you aim for it and push yourself further because of it. So, whether you want to be sponsored by your favorite bodybuilding clothing brand or want to have the best deadlift in your gym, aim high.

Plan to Be Better

Finally, it's important to consider how you can be better next year. There's no denying that you've put all of your energy into these previous months and the sweat stains on your bodybuilding clothes are there to prove it. That's great, but how are you going to top your progress this year? Achieving greatness in the iron sport is about being uncomfortable. It's about chasing bigger and better things. Don't sit back and admire your progress for too long because there's still plenty you can do to be the best lifter you possibly can be.
