Struggling to Hit a PR? Try These 3 Tips

Remember the good old days when new PRs seemed to happen every workout? For some of you out there, you might even reminisce on the days that you’d get a new PR at least once a week. The thing is, the more we lift and the longer we do it, PRs can be a bit trickier to hit. There’s nothing worse than plotting out your program, putting in the work, and feeling confident you can hit that 400-pound back squat at the end of the week. But you try, fail, and leave your partner to help you re-rack the bar.

Are you doomed never to hit a PR again, or at least not for a long time? Not quite. Here are a few things that you should try to keep in mind to help bust a difficult PR.

Make Explosiveness the Priority

Are you taking your warm-up sets seriously? For the most part, we use our warm-up sets as a way to ensure that our bodies are primed and ready for the heavy stuff. But you shouldn’t take them lightly. Explosiveness is a massive part of hitting a PR. Instead of just going through the motions as you build up the weight en route to the PR attempt, treat each lighter rep as if it is the PR itself with the same intensity and explosiveness. You could have better luck getting through a sticking point on the actual attempt.

Try a Different, Yet Complementing Movement for a Bit

If you’re trying to hit a squat PR, common consensus would have you believe that you should be training that exact movement. This can work for a while, but the secret to hitting that back squat PR could be training with a different yet complementary movement. For example, rather than doing back squats day in and day out, try throwing front squats into your training regimen. You’ll work your muscles a little bit differently and hit those areas that back squats might not. When the time comes for you to put on your bodybuilding clothing and attempt the PR, back squats will feel fresh, which might be just what you need to hit that PR.

Eliminate Limitations and Other Variables

PR day might as well be a personal holiday for most of us. But success can largely depend on being scientific in your approach. Like all great experiments, you must eliminate limitations, reduce external variables, and be consistent in your approach to be successful. This means everything, from having the same PR song queued up to having your shoes laced up tight or even wearing your lucky bodybuilding clothes.

Whatever you have to do, aim to eliminate anything that could throw off your mental or physical game and get after it. And remember, even if you fail on the first attempt, take a step back, catch your breath, and try again. Sometimes the second time is the charm.
